JOB DESCRIPTION:
  • Trains and supervises the professional staff in the Accounting office.
  • Develops procedures, assists in directing the daily operations, coordinates the reporting process, and assists in audit processes for managing department activities.
  • Assumes responsibility and accountability for decisions in the absence of the Controller.
  • Provides instruction and support on the proper use of Financial Accounting System and answers users' questions.
  • Assists in the development of new or improved systems.
  • Oversees internal and external audit process and identifies and proposes suggestions for improved efficiency.
  • Answers auditors' questions; ensures that documented records support the audited financial statements; ensures that audit adjustments are properly recorded; responds to auditors comments; and develops and implements procedures to enact accepted audit recommendations.
  • Assists in the preparation, development, and monitoring of department budgets to ensure compliance with fiscal constraints. Supervises the preparation of financial statements; reviews and analyzes to ensure accuracy and consistency; ensures statements adhere to appropriate state and federal guidelines.
  • Assesses the needs of users and proposes suggestions for the addition or deletion of supplemental supporting schedules.
  • Reviews financial statements prepared by other universities/hospitals for comparability and develops ideas for improvements.
  • Reviews accounting data to ensure accuracy, develops solutions to identify problems, and ensures that appropriate corrections are made to meet deadlines.
  • Reviews computer and/or software needs and proposed changes; suggests system modifications and enhancements; determines availability of resources to meet identified needs. Works with designated Information Systems staff to maintain the integrity of the system and resolve system related problems; represents the department on various information systems development committees.
  • Assists in coordination of all systems which feed into the Financial Accounting System and with both hospitals.
  • Manages the development and maintenance of effective information systems by identifying user needs, and ensuring accurate, complete, and efficient operations.
  • Interprets applicable regulations and establishes filing and auditing procedures to ensure complete and accurate documentation.
  • Assigns responsibility for preparing operational and statistical reports for management and regulatory agencies to staff; reviews completed reports for compliance with regulations and to assist in making fact-based decisions.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or a related field.
  • Six years related experience, including management experience preferably in a related setting (i.e.. University or non-profit setting for Emory University, hospital or health related finance for Hospital).
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS (MediumMax 25lbs): up to 25 lbs, 0-33% of the work day (occasionally); 11-25 lbs, 34-66% of the workday (frequently); 01-10 lbs, 67-100% of the workday (constantly); Lifting 25 lbs max; Carrying of objects up to 25 lbs; Occasional to frequent standing & walking, Occasional sitting, Close eye work (computers, typing, reading, writing), Physical demands may vary depending on assigned work area and work tasks.

Environmental exposures include, but are not limited to: Blood-borne pathogen exposure Bio-hazardous waste Chemicals/gases/fumes/vapors Communicable diseases Electrical shock , Floor Surfaces, Hot/Cold Temperatures, Indoor/Outdoor conditions, Latex, Lighting, Patient care/handling injuries, Radiation, Shift work, Travel may be required. Use of personal protective equipment, including respirators, environmental conditions may vary depending on assigned work area and work tasks.
